ActivRAC in Biotech: Spacesaver provides compact storage for tissue samples
08 Nov 2017
A pharmaceutical company in New England saw an opportunity to save space and decrease energy costs as their facility underwent a renovation. The project architect approached the local Spacesaver distributor with specific requests for storage in a deep freeze: the staff needed to store more than 4600 boxes of tissue samples in a walk-in freezer that would be kept at -20 degrees Celsius. The freezer measured approximately 20 feet by 20 feet.
The local Spacesaver representative’s first task was to see if the project was feasible, which required getting measurements for the boxes that would be stored, determining shelf opening size, and drawing a high-density mobile storage system that could accommodate thousands of boxes. He designed an ActivRAC® Mobilized Storage System with mechanical-assist handles, which allow users to move thousands of pounds with minimal effort.
Because condensation can be a problem in freezer environments, the next order of business was to ensure that rust would not be an issue anywhere in the system.
Installation went smoothly and the end result is a clean, efficient storage system that keeps tissue samples organized and accessible, even in the extreme environment of a -20-degree freezer.
After consulting with their Spacesaver representative, the design team opted for surface-mounted stainless steel rails, which provide even distribution of heavy loads and precision alignment for trouble-free carriage operation. The design team concluded that rust would not be an issue on shelving sealed with powder-coat paint.
