There are many possible reasons you became an architect – the thrill of making and creating, the desire to create spaces that serve communities and enhance lives – but chances are it wasn’t to configure lockers and calculate floor loading for mobile shelving systems.

YOUR TIME IS VALUABLE

That’s why we’re here to help work out the nitty gritty storage details from planning to execution. With years of experience in storage space planning, spec-ing, and installation, we can design a storage solution that increases the space’s functionality and matches the vision of the client. We’ll even work out the floor-loading, fire, ADA, and seismic compliance.

Partnership in Action: Chemical Heritage Foundation & Always By Design

Architect Experience:

It was a difficult, challenging project, and in working with Spacesaver and DSSI, we knew exactly what the system was and what the dimensions were. That made it a very straightforward installation and a smooth operation.

Ed Barnhart - Architect for Chemical Heritage Foundation's Archive Storage Facility Project

In our work with Philadelphia’s Chemical Heritage Foundation, we partnered with local architect Ed Barnhart, founder of Always by Design (AxD) Studio. Ed had worked with the Foundation on several projects, the most recent one being their archival storage facility. The Foundation decided restore a historic 1850s building that was near their archive storage location—partly because the location solved logistic retrieval issues, and partly because they wanted to give back to the community by revitalizing a historic building.

Chemical Heritage Foundation Exterior Rendering

To say the building was an interesting size would be putting it mildly. After a structural engineer figured out how to stabilize the exterior face of the building, the next challenge was designing around its existing size—a mere 16 feet of width. At first, Barnhart investigated using individual floors in the building but once he accounted for an elevator and two egress stairways, there was no real useable space left to store the archives. He then reached out to DSSI who helped assess the storage needs for the facility, and ultimately installed a 36-foot-tall XTend® Mobile High-Bay system, with one moveable range between two fixed units. The system enabled them to achieve approximately 8,400 linear feet of shelving to house new collections.

CHANGING SPACES – STORAGE SOLUTIONS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY LIBRARY

changing-m0fa2e937re7a38nfowaxdxc56l9i8wfvcxaxk94sk

Counts toward 1 AIA CES LU Credit

Program Description: Libraries are no longer JUST places for research, browsing, studying, and quiet contemplation. The library’s functionality is changing from “book storage space” to “technology-rich people space.”Learn how new information formats, student expectations, steady acquisition rates, weeding, digitizing, economic conditions and sustainable design challenges can all be addressed with appropriate storage solutions and space planning.

DESIGNING ACUTE CARE ENVIRONMENTS WITH POINT OF NEED STORAGE

HealthcareCEU-m0fa36g8wsgsr0xg49p6px1v5sy17iah5i1hpj867u

Counts toward 1 AIA/HSW LU Credit

Program Description: In this presentation we will follow medical supplies throughout the Acute Care environment in order to see how storage location and configuration, if correctly designed, can influence staff functions, staff efficiency, staff productivity, and ultimately… patient care. In addition, careful planning can produce marked improvements in inventory control–a prime importance in healthcare facilities today. Learn how to bring storage closer to the point-of-care, plan storage with sustainability in mind and understand the various storage planning considerations.

FLOOR LOADING 101

floorload-m0fa34kkj4e8b66f609uv7a8ryzjhrsxaz6wdb63yc

Counts toward 1 AIA/CES HSW LU

Program Description: Speed up the building design and decision-making process by avoiding unnecessary delays and changes with an ability to identify the new construction building types most suitable for high-density storage. Moreover, several strategies exist to accommodate heavy storage system loads. These include the ability to reorient, redistribute, relocate, reconfigure and reinforce. This program contains an illustrated case study as well as several examples of post construction modifications and supplements for high-density storage.

HOW STORAGE CAN HELP FULFILL EXECUTIVE ORDER 13514

EO13514-m0fa32ow5gbnny95gzglq7rbl78t2dlgmpvxer8was

Counts toward 1 AIA/HSW LU and .1 IDCEC CEU Credit

Program Description: This presentation describes the requirements of Federal Executive Order 13514 and how storage can assist in compliance. The GSA provides some guidelines for sustainable contract actions, which we review and based on these recommendations we will demonstrate how storage can directly impact sustainable design and comply with federal regulations.

HOW STORAGE CONTRIBUTES TO YOUR SUSTAINABLE DESIGN AND LEED CERTIFICATION EFFORTS

sus-m0fa4dotn63zsgcvujry6vwdagt5r8s1h6i7elb7no

Counts toward 1 AIA/HSW LU and .1 IDCEC CEU Credit

Program Description: Sustainable Design is more and more a significant consideration with new construction and renovation projects alike. As a result, architects and designers are faced with increased pressures to balance sustainability with the client’s usability needs and budgetary constraints. This presentation compares and contrasts traditional storage products against today’s flexible storage solutions. The focus is on illustrating how today’s customizable storage solutions can contribute to sustainable design goals and LEED certification efforts by design. Attendees will see animations, application photos, and even video focused on demonstrating the fundamental characteristics of storage products and how each can be manipulated to balance sustainable design with the needs of the end user.

OPTIMIZING STORAGE FROM COLLAR TO CONVICTION PART 1

CC1-m0fa2e937re7a38nfowaxdxc56l9i8wfvcxaxk94sk

Counts toward 1 AIA/CES LU

Program Description: Optimizing Storage: From Collar to Conviction will identify major storage concerns within Law Enforcement Facilities. While identifying major storage concerns (especially evidence), this presentation will also identify storage solutions for those concerns that maximize efficiency, save floor space, reduce construction costs and keep criminals behind bars. Finally, the presentation will touch upon other major planning considerations, such as floor loading, fire codes and safety requirements.

OPTIMIZING STORAGE FROM COLLAR TO CONVICTION PART 2

CC2-m0fa2e937re7a38nfowaxdxc56l9i8wfvcxaxk94sk

Counts toward 1 AIA/CES LU

Program Description: Optimizing Storage: From Collar to Conviction, Part II will identify major storage concerns within three segments in the Public Safety market: Crime Labs, Courthouses and Corrections. While identifying major storage concerns, this presentation will also identify storage solutions for those concerns that maximize efficiency, save floor space, reduce construction costs and keep criminals behind bars. Finally, the presentation will touch upon other major planning considerations, such as floor loading, fire codes and safety requirements.

SCHOOL YOUR SPACE

sys-m0fa4dotn63zsgcvujry6vwdagt5r8s1h6i7elb7no

Counts toward 1 AIA/CES LU

Program Description: A college campus is a small city. People live, eat, study, exercise, perform, and sometimes even seek medical attention within the grounds of their school. Planning spaces for higher education environments is not just about designing classrooms. Unique and thoughtful storage solutions can assist in the creation of highly functional interior spaces within the college campus environment. Let us look at some of the most common campus facilities and understand how storage can be incorporated into their design.

SMART STORAGE – SMARTER WORKSPACES
