Maintainable, reliable, and survivable—that’s a military Humvee in a nutshell. This dependable vehicle has been part of United States military combat since the U.S. invasion of Panama in 1989.
Since then, the Humvee has become the “vehicular backbone” of United States military forces around the world—and as a result, Humvees have transitioned from simply transporting personnel and light cargo to a fleet with over 15 different configurations, from weapons carriers and ambulances to shelter and cargo/troop carriers.
As the Humvee serves several different purposes during combat, they also store a variety of different kit set-ups, such as medic kits, engineer kits, electrician kits, and warfighter kits—all kits that live in the vehicle with supplies to suit the particular configuration or job of that Humvee.
When a local National Guard Training Center needed a better way to store those kit set-ups, they turned to DSSI. The Center had an inventory of 150 Humvees with a variety of set-ups, and had previously stored the kits broken down into large bins of like parts. This meant a lot of items all piled on top of one another—1,500 screwdrivers, 500 fire extinguishers, 500 chains, and 500 axes, among other things—with no way to inventory or maintain the equipment.
Working with the Center’s Support Branch Supervisor, DSSI recommended an industrial racks on rails solution known as ActivRAC® 7P Mobilized Storage System outfitted with shelving. The industrial racks on rails made it possible to store each kit fully assembled in a way that was also easy to deploy when specific reserve units came in for training. Each carriage of the ActivRAC 7P system holds up to 7,000 lbs., which was instrumental for storing these heavy kits in a complete package.
The ActivRAC system also made it easier for the equipment to be inventoried. The specific styles of kits were divided into the separate carriages of the system, and if parts were broken or missing after a training was complete or when items were turned back in, it was something the equipment managers could be made aware of and remedy immediately.
With the industrial racks on rails system, this solution created the necessary room for all the kits in 1/3 of the space of the old storage solution, and because of the new way the kits were being packaged and stored, there was a significant reduction in the time it took for the kits to be issued and turned in.
ActivRAC is an ideal solution for any military facility needed to increase their capacity. When Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst was consolidating their facility without constructing a larger building, they used ActivRAC to increase capacity by over 100%.
